<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Thanks to all of you who took the time out to reply to my search for homebrewing gluten free beer. While I didn't have the beer ingredients and equipment ready for Valentine's Day (brewing gluten free beer seems to be a challenging idea!), I was able to give my husband the info so far and my good intentions! We're going to read up some more using references from this summary and give it a try. If anyone has any more info or has made homebrew attempts, please keep us posted. I received 8 replies, which are included below. They include one vote for Hard Cider, one recommended rice beer, two websites for homebrewing gluten free beer, one recommended German beer, one magazine article with a gluten free beer recipe, and a suggestion to contact Oregon State University. Keep in mind that I have not confirmed the gluten free status of any of the recommendations. Here are the summaries: ------------------------------------------------ <<I can remember visiting the Tecate Brewery maybe thirty years ago now. The thing that astonished me was that beer was brewed from rice, not wheat. That particular beer is fairly common here in California, and I have always tolerated it OK. I don't drink beer often, and I am not as sensitive as some of you folks. So you can try contacting the Tecate Brewery (in Tecate, Baja California, Estados Unidos Mexicanos), and also ask around for recipes for *rice* *beer*.>> -------------------------------------------------------------------- <<I have found that hard cider is the next best thing. Hardcore Apple Cider is my favorite and they just came out with a Black Cider, which is really good. At least I feel as though I'm able to enjoy a beer with the family.>> ------------------------------------------------------------------- Two homebrew gluten free beer websites: http://members.aa.net/~rscraff/beer/gfb.html and http://www.fortunecity.com/boozers/brewerytap/555/gfbeer/gfbeer.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------- <<I am a celiac from Germany. A few days ago I received the new journal of the German celiac disease support group and there was a report about a German brewer who develloped gf beer. Maybe the editors of the journal can help you and give you the address of the brewer. Here is the e-mail adress of the "Deutsche Zoeliakiegesellschaft" (German celiac society): [log in to unmask] They have also a Web-Page, but it is in German: http://home.t-online.de/home/DZG.E.V./homepage.htm >> ------------------------------------------------------------------- <<Try locating a copy of the Feb/March 1994 magazine called "Beer Review". They published a article entitled "Beer Allergy". It is a recipe for brewing a GF beer.>> ------------------------------------------------------------------- <<Perhaps Oregon State University will help you. They started a microbrewery program a few years ago with some gift money. I don't know however, if they will help an individual person or if you have to be a student taking the courses. Since I am most concerned about you doing this safely, you need to tell them it is your concern also not to poison your husband.>> ------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks again to all of you who sent along your information!
