Hi,
Gayle already provided a good summary of the responses she
received, but since I was the original poster, I thought I better add a
couple that she didn't have:

My original post had to do with how long one should continue to take
L-Glutamine amino acids supplements, which are supposed to help heal the
damaged villi. Here are the additional responses:

I decided to wean myself off L-Glutamine so I tried taking it (500 mg)
every other day instead of daily. After 3 alternate days I realized
that many of my symptoms were returning and have gone back--gladly!--to
daily intake.
I started this regime because of advice I found here on the list. I
hope this is helpful to you.

While my doctor was trying to find out what was wrong with me, I had an
amino acid test which showed that I was deplete in many amino acids, and
L' Glutamine was just one of them. That was over a year ago. I have
been taking L-Glutamine (as well as some other aminos) ever since. Just
a month ago, my doctor had my amino acids retested (I have been GF since
the summer of 1997), and although the rest of my amino acids are now
within the normal range, my L'Glutamine levels are still below the
normal range. So the bottom line is that a holistic doctor such as the
one I go to, uses a blood test to determine if you need certain amino
acids and if you need to stay on a particular one. With my doctor, it
isn't hit or miss. He uses a blood test to determine these things.
