First degree relatives of those with biopsy-proven celiac disease are considered part of the at-risk population for developing CD sometime in their lifetime. Last October, the Westchester, New York, celiac support group hosted a screening for its members as part of this study. Five percent of the first-degree relatives with NO symptoms turned out to have an "easily made positive diagnosis." Drs. Fasano and Horvath considered this to be significant. Additionally, the 20 year old daughter of the founder of the Westchester group was diagnosed with CD through this screening. She was totally asymptomatic, but on biopsy showed a totally flat villi. The University of Maryland School of Medicine has established the Center For Celiac Research (CFCR) under the direction of Drs. Alessio Fasano and Karoly Horvath. CFCR has begun a comprehensive three-year, nationwide serology screening to establish the prevalence of Celiac Disease in the United States doing serology testing for CD as part of this study. Your participation in this study will help resolve the critical unanswered question: How many American celiacs are there - really? CDF strongly urges you to follow the recommendation that all first degree relatives have this simple blood test to screen for gluten sensitivity, to reduce the risk of delayed diagnosis and other associated disorders. FIRST-DEGREE RELATIVES ARE PARENTS, SIBLINGS OR CHILDREN OF BIOPSY-PROVEN CELIACS. don baisch [log in to unmask] glendora, ca
