Everyone who wrote felt the Dr. was quite insensitive. I got many suggestions. Here are some of the suggestions: *find a new Dr. *get a second opinion through the HMO *try alternative medicine; chiropractors, naturopaths,nutrionists *try supplements *print the responses and give them to the Dr. *some sent web sites *some shared that they have similar allergies on top of gluten **most shared that they have had the same reactions from the medical field All of the responses really helped me. It was difficult to be told my coping mechanisms were mentally ill. My reason for seeing the Doc was for a work physical, not for GI problems. She asked me how it was all going and I naively told her. Tests I have tried: *sigmoidoscopy and endoscopy I allowed this to be done after being pretty strictly gf for a year. The GI doctor who performed it didn't see a problem with my being gf before the test and adamantly told me afterwards to go eat all the wheat I wanted because I was absolutely not celiac. He was one of the Celiac specialists at our University hospital. He also did blood tests which came back negative. I was not real aware at the time that you needed to be eating gluten before this test. There is no way I can eat gluten to do this test as it incapacitates me. I would not be able to work. *I conferred with a dietician who told me my problems were too severe for her to be able to help me. She said if I can't eat the starchy foods that provide energy there is nothing she can do for me. I saw her point. *I saw an allergist who diagnosed me right away with allergic gastroenteritis. We tried a couple of meds to no avail and so he referred me to an endocrinologist. *The endocrinologist tested for hypoglycemia and left it at that because that was all my HMO Dr. had approved. It was negative. * The HMO Dr. screened me for depression. It came up negative. All of this has occurred in the last 9 months. I found out about Celiac about two years ago, and began the diet. I have been struggling with serious feeling of deprivation that lead to depressive feelings, so I began earnestly to seek medical help. Thing I am now doing: *I have been seeing a chiropractor for a year now due to a back injury and he just began adding nutritional counseling to his scope of practice. He said something about how the mainstream medical field focuses on treating pathological diseases and doesn't work on preventing them before they reach that point. He seems to think that my intolerances could over time progress to other more serious problems, at which time the Dr's would intervene. We both agree that then is a bit late to start worrying. He is starting me on some enzymes for digestion, something for the adrenals and reactive hypoglycemia, and vitamins and minerals *I talked with the owner of Authentic foods yesterday and thought he was so kind. He informed me of some of the products that I can eat that are without corn, gluten or rice. It will be so nice to have baked goods, marinated meats and flavored coffee again. : ) THANKS to the people who write about there being such products around. What to do about a definitive diagnosis? I am stumped. I really just want to rule out anything that can actually be treated such as thyroid, adrenal or pancreatic problems. For now I am going to work with the chiropractor and be happy. He seems to believe that even if it is one of these problems, there is a reason underneath, that will eventually create a pathological condition. Better to let the body heal and rejuvenate itself over time and with assistance. I guess that is holistic medicine? Sorry this is long, Donna
