<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Dear List: There has been discussion recently on this list about the possible (and I repeat "possible") safety of oats in the celiac diet. As a test, for the first time since diagnosis, we decided to make oatmeal for breakfast. I selected, as carefully as I could, which oatmeal to buy. I chose Quaker Oats (cooks in 1 minute) brand. The package boasts: "For over 100 years, Quaker oats has had just one ingredient: pure whole grain oats. Nothing added, nothing taken out...." Ingredients list 100% natural rolled oats. True, I did not call the company and I am aware of the possibility of cross-contamination with wheat in the fields. It would be an overseas call for me and I also didn't want to be put on hold by some rude operator. I just took the company at its word. Within 4 hours, my son (6) had vomitted up his entire breakfast cerael. He isn't sensitive to anything but the gluten-containing grains and hasn't had a vomitting experience since we went off the challenge test 9 months ago. So, please think twice before trying the experiment. Make sure you're near a bathroom, just in case. I'd be real interested in hearing if anyone else has had a reaction to oats in general, or Quaker in particular. Happy weekending, Sharon Marcus
