<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Flying on American has never presented a problem for me, however, my experience has only been taking transcontinental flights in first class. In fact, I have never had to order a special meal. I do take along a package of crackers. But, the meals are pretty much always the same: a caviar course to start (forget the blini and toast points, just use your own crackers), a green salad with fresh lobster, a large selection of entrees such a grilled chicken or steak or a veal chop with fresh vegetables, a cheese and fruit course and the dessert is always ice cream and berries. Breakfast is yogurt and fruit, or eggs made to order with bacon and fruit (obviously, don't eat the bread). It's always more food than I would eat in an entire day anyway! Business class is basically the same (just a smaller wine selection)...I know because I checked yestereday, as our family is flying business class next week. I don't know about flying coach, which obviously could present a problem, but I do know you can order hamburger meals (which they make available for children) and fruit plates...so if you got a couple of those it would seem to be a good solution. -Jane Oswaks
