<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Accidental Ingestion of Fruit Summary Original letter asked if bag of frozen chunks of mango, papaya and pineapple infused with passion fruit juice is gluten free as I was eating it every day for at least a week and seemed to be having a reaction that was getting worse every day. I had not added anything else that was new and do not eat out at all. The responses were as follows: 1. Reaction might not be from gluten but rather from a food allergy. You might be allergic to the passion fruit juice. Lots of people with CD also have food allergies. 2. If passion juice is made from concentrate, it could have gluten. Tropicaina juices from concentrate have gluten and this person reacts to all RW Knudsen juices from concentrate as well. TJ does not comment on whether or not their products are made on dedicated gluten free lines. The cross contamination is usually what gets us. We know enough not to eat something with gluten but how many times do we get sick anyway. My advice to you is to go to the grocery store, buy some mangos, cut them up and freeze them yourself. That is the safest and tastiest way. 3. Maybe combination of fruits may be bothering you or allergy to one of the fruits. This persons daughter is allergic to pineapple. She has asthma. The nutritionist said she should never have mango or cantelope or other nightshades as that would increase the chance of allergic reaction. 4. This person tracked down her accidental gluten contamination to canola oil. If using it, try omitting it for a week or so. 5. TJ gluten free list says they do not check for any cross contamination issues before calling food gluten free. 6. Maybe just reacting to too much acid in the fruit and gut too acid from eating too much fruit. 7. One can have problems with GF food too. 8. This persons mother started having diarrhea if she ate too much fruit. She did not have CD. She could eat some canned but not fresh or frozen. 9. Passion juice is the culprit if from a non US Company and if it has citric acid added as an ingredient. It can be made from wheat if origin is outside US. 10. Talk to the manager of local TJ's and have them email dietician. They prefer to do the emailing and want to be the kind of store that has rapport with customers. 11. This persons nutritionist said mango is one fruit celiacs should not have along with cantelope. She feels some foods including nightshade vegetables (eggplant, tomatoes, onions) cross over and have similar molecular structure to gluten. 12.Often products supposed to be gluten free aren't and ingredients are included which are not mentioned on the label. 13. It is not unusual to put gluten in frozen fruit or juices. Too much of certain fruits can cause gluten like symptoms. To be continued- May need to wait until tomorrow to finish. Thank you to everyone answering my question. Robin in Massachusetts *Support summarization of posts, reply to the SENDER not the CELIAC List*
