<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> This is not exactly celiac related except for the irony of the whole thing. I was reading yesterday that there is a new diet pill out that works by a sort of behavior modification. If you eat any fat, you end up in the bathroom. Some behavior modification. It is called Orlisttat and the following are its side effect which, as I told my doctor, mimic Celiac Disease. "Some side effects with orlistat include oily spotting, gas with discharge, urgent need to go to the bathroom, oily or fatty stools, an oily discharge, increased number of bowel movements, and inability to control bowel movements. These side effects are generally mild and temporary, but may be worsened by eating foods that are high in fat. Also, because orlistat reduces the absorption of some vitamins, patients should take a multivitamin at least 2 hours before or after taking orlistat. " Now don't you find that ironic. If they can make a drug that can "cause" malabsorption, you would think they could find one that would prevent malabsorption. Just a thought. I am not a celiac; my son is. I need to lose weight but after watching what my son and fellow celiacs go through, I would not even consider taking a drug like this to lose weight. The other thought I had is what would happen to an undiagnosed celiac with a weight problem and we know there are some who do not have weight loss as a symptom. If one was already predisposed to celiac disease, can you just imagine what it would do to them? They could be having serious problems and not even know they are gluten intolerant. Just wanted to share this with you. Rosalie
