This made me laugh. One thing I have notice repeatedly is the confusion
even among biologists of Darwinian and Lamarckian evolution. A few
years back I read an impassioned "defense" of evolution in Scientific
American. It purported to show how simple it was for complex structures
to develop, such as the eye, by simple selection. Lamarckian from first
to last. It is no wonder that so many educated people have trouble
accepting evolution when even supposed experts offer such poor
apologies. The subtle gene changes necessary for even "simple"
phenotypic changes seem to escape people. No surprise at all that a TV
show couldn't keep this point clear.
