Modern athletes have taken the SAID principle (Specific Adaptations to
Imposed Demands) to new heights. I agree that there is some crossover, but
all my experience has shown me that it's not sufficient to do 'very well',
given the times that athletes who train specifically for marathons are
clocking. I guess we would need to define 'very well'. In my personal
experience, no amount of weight training is going to allow me to complete
26 sub 6 minute miles, or even sub 7 minute miles. Maybe I don't have the
'right' genetics.

Jim, I know you posted about a mtn biking trip you are taking sometime in
the future, and relying on your HIT type training to see you through
it. I'll be interested to hear how that goes. As I think I mentioned
earlier, I'm an avid mtn bker and do also do olympic lifting. I find they
complement each other, but if I lay off the bike for a few months and just
lift, then jump back on the bike, I suffer tremendously. And the converse
is true, at least for me.

Rob Wolf of Crossfit fame is on this list, and they are great proponents of
crossover type fitness and GPP, maybe he will chime in.

Tim
