Hi John,

When I was diagnosed by a dermatologist to have DH in 1992 he put me on
dapsone. I have had diabetes since 1971 and was nearly blinded by cataracts
about that time. In addition to that I came back from Thailand in 1966 with
infectious hepatitis and had elevated bilirubens for months. When I started
to take dapsone it caused my biliruben to be elevated again and I was put on
Sulfapyridine. The Merk Manual lists it as an alternative medication. In
my case it didn't work as well, but the real problem was that I WAS NOT PUT
ON A G/F DIET ! This went on until 1996 till I saw an article in Diabetes
Forecast, WHEAT'S YOUR PROBLEM and I immediately went on a g/f diet and it
took about 3 years to get all the IgA deposits out of my system. I would
take about 50mg of dapsone every two weeks or every time I would have a
break-out. Prior to that I was taking 50-100 mg a day and still breaking
out. I am military retired and they had the Sulfapyridine at the Air Force
base near me. Since you mentioned England, I assume you are there? Anyway I
just wanted to let you know that it works, but on a strict g/f diet you
should have very few lesions?

John,
When I was first diagnosed with DH, my dermatologist at that time, a Dr.
Joseph in Pasadena, TX prescribed it for me. I had to go to a "compounding"
pharmacy in Houston. It was shipped to me by mail order. I don't remember
the name of the pharmacy.

My present dermatologist prescribed Azulfidine which is readily available
and doesn't have the problems of Dapsone.

Currently I have been living gluten-free and haven't required medication.

Hi,

We've posted a list of approximately 145 over the counter drugs
and nutritional supplements at the Clan Thompson website.
<http://www.idsl.net/celiac>

Information about each drug was verified directly with each
manufacturer. There's a list of 160 prescription drugs which visitors
can access, as well. Hope both lists will help celiacs decide
whether or not they want to use a particular medication.

Regards,
Lani K. Thompson

Again, many thanks

John Butcher
