It finally happened. I needed a specific type of antibiotic that doesn't have
a guaranteed gf version. After two exhausting, frustrating days of explaining
celiac to my physician's employees, drug companies, the pharmacists at the
chain store that bought my druggist's records,....I called Stokes, the
pharmacy in Medford, NJ that advertises in our national newsletters, to find
out if they could compound the medication I needed. They're driving distance
from home...and once I could get my doctor's office to relay the prescription,
I had my cream.
I was very pleased with the people at Stokes, indeed. Mainly...the
professional attitude. How nice to be treated as normal! They do gf everyday!
Thought I'd share the rest of the story.... When my doctor's nurse first
called me (at work) to tell me she was calling in the prescription and I
questionned the gf status, she said she never heard of celiac. (Sigh!) I went
into my speech. She was sweet, but baffled. She read the ingredients to me off
a sample, but that was inconclusive. Well, in her eyes, the doctor knows
everything (sic).....I heard her ask my doctor's partner if the product was
gluten-free. The "wise", educated doctor, who actually heard of celiac, said,
"It should be o.k. It doesn't say 'gluten' on it."
It almost sounds like a punchline. Too bad it's not a joke.
