The University of Maryland, in which 13,000 blood somewhat random samples were tested using the standard test of the day (which is believe is not the more accurate test being used now). The blood samples includes lots of WV school children, Red Cross blood bank blood and more from a cross section of the entire nation. The results were 1 in 133 of the general population and 1 in 22 of relatives of celiacs.

I believe NIH has actually said in some of their literature that the incidence may be 1 in 100.

I was at a lecture by Dr. Fasano from the Celiac Clinic at the Univ. of MD and he was asked how many of the population were just gluten intolerant. We were astounded when he said 35%. I've read other literature and articles saying the gluten intolerant may be pre-celiac, that it doesn't test positive in the blood until it's advanced stages.

So when you hear that those of us who are diagnosed are the tip of the iceberg, it is no exaggeration.
