Vacation Tip for the Gluten Intolerant -- by Mary Lu Mase, Houston

My husband and I just returned from a great vacation on the Rocky
Mountaineer Railway in Canada, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who
loves wonderful mountain scenery and needs gluten-free meals! We had heard
good things from friends who had gone across Canada by rail, but we were
especially interested in some of their new routes. We selected their Classic
Circle Tour which takes you on the Yellowhead Route between Vancouver and
Jasper, Alberta, through the city of Kaploops. Then you continue on the
Fraser Discovery Route from Jasper toVancouver and Jasper, Alberta, through
the city of Kaploops. Then you continue on the Fraser Discovery Route from
Jasper to Whistler, following the Fraser River to Quesnel and through the
Cariboo. Then on the final day, the Whistler Mountaineer returns you to
Vancouver. The scenery is spectacular with wonderful waterfalls, snowcapped
mountains, exciting rapids, and abundant wildlife. We saw black bear, deer,
elk, eagles and osprey on our trip.

But most important to me were the members of the Guest Services Team
who were so knowledgeable about the gluten free diet! The gourmet meals we
were served were similar to those in a five star hotel dining room, with a
variety of menu selections and outstanding service. The chefs were able to
adapt most items to make them gluten free, and when they could not, they
substituted something that was - often bringing me a dish or dessert that
made those around me wish they had celiac disease!

My husband made our reservations through Rocky Mountaineer Vacations in
Vancouver by calling 1-800-665-7245. He asked if they accommodated those who
needed gluten-free diets and was assured all they needed was my name for
their records. On each route, all I did was mention it to one of the
attendants and they handled it from there. Each evening we stopped, had
dinner and stayed in hotels or inns. I found the wait staff in Canadian
restaurants far more familiar with the gluten-free diet than those in the
States and never had a problem . I highly recommend this as a great
vacation!
