My niece, now age 20, had always had amazingly flexible joints & could
curl herself up like a pretzel, you know kinda like those amazing folks
you see in circuses. She could clasp her hands together and circle them
over her head, down her back then under her feet then back to the front.
At age 16, she dislocated her hip doing a high kick in TaeKwonDo class.
She was referred to an orthopaedist who diagnosed her with some syndrome,
the name of which escapes me. The ortho doc explained that there are
five connective tissue proteins necessary for joint stability and that
one of her five protiens is either missing or faulty which makes her
joints extra flexible. He also explained that it is a genetic disorder
that "tends to run in families." I believe that it "tends to run" in
celiac families. My neice was instructed NOT to hyperflex her joints
anymore & was advised NOT to participate in strenous sports until age 30.
Well, I believe I have it too as I also have very hypermobile joints. I
am well acquainted with a celiac massage therapist who insists that
"floppy joints" are one of the halmarks of celiac disease. She claims
she can tell a celiac by the feel of their joints & connective tissues.
She's recommended celiac testing & the GF diet to many clients who later
reported back to her that her hunch was correct. ~Valeire in Tacoma, WA
