I just called Bausch & Lomb to see if their Ocuvite vitamins have gluten.
The first person said that they don't put any gluten ingredients in their
vitamins but they can't guarantee them to be GF because gluten could be
introduced during manufacturing. That person then said that I should talk
to their medical people about this issue. A young woman came on the line to
say that the vitamins don't contain wheat gluten but could contain rye or
barley--they couldn't say for sure and therefore don't call their products
gluten free. I asked whether she could say if my particular lot of vitamins
contained rye or barley and our conversation went downhill from there.
Obviously they don't want to have anything to do with taking responsibility
for making an affirmative statement about what their products contain.
Frankly, I have a hard time with this since they are a drug manufacturer.
Food companies can do it so why couldn't a drug manufacturer? Now I have
240 Ocuvite tablets that I have to return. By the way, they also
manufacture Preservision (which I have taken without incident). In case
anyone agrees with me and wants to call and give them a piece of their mind,
their number is 1-800-323-0000.
