Regarding my question about whether to discard or keep pre-Celiac diagnosis pots and pans, the general consensus seemed to be to keep stainless steel pans and utensils as long as they were scrubbed well to remove residue or burnt on foods. Some suggested using a product like Barkeeper's Friend, or to fill with water and boil for awhile on the stove, and then scrubbing will be easier. Everyone agreed that getting rid of stainless steel or metal colanders was best, as bits of residue can hide in the holes. Most people said to get rid of non-stick and cast iron because gluten could hide in scratches or cracks. Just about everyone vehemently said to get rid of anything made of wood, including cutting boards and mixing spoons. There seemed to be mixed reactions about plastic utensils and/or the silicone type baking pans.

Most everyone said that whatever items you decide to keep should be scrubbed really well and/or run through the dishwasher.

Most suggested getting rid of the toaster or at least buying a new toaster dedicated to the Celiac in the house. One person said they just use the same toaster as their gluten-eating family members except they turn it upside down and empty the crumbs out.

Thank you to everyone for your thorough and caring responses.

Here's to a GF life, full of happiness and joy and settled stomachs:).

  Best wishes,
  Ellen A.
