Just wanted to let the List know that eye drops are absorbed systemically.

I recently had cataract surgery on both eyes at two week intervals. I was put on eydrops afterwards: Vigamox, Voltaren and Maxidex. Because Voltaren tablets had been the precipitating factor with celiac I was very nervous but was told that the medication stayed in the eye and was not systemic.

Unfortunately, it is systemic. My stomach reacted and my whole digestive tract felt as if it had been scrubbed out with an SOS pad! I then contacted the makers of all three and stomach irritation (severe) was listed under all three.

It was not a question of gluten but of the digestive tract irritation. I never take any NSAIDs or other stomach irritating drugs because my system won't tolerate them. So if any of you have problems with NSAIDs, please note that the eye drop versions are absorbed and do affect the digestive tract. Jane
