I've had an experience similar to others on this list. When I went to a
nutritionist to find out what I could do to curb the diarrhea and digestive
problems, she gave me some food tips (which I no longer remember) and
offered her "diagnosis" of IBS. A year later, by a great stroke of luck,
I found a doctor specializing in nutritional medicine who had me tested
for food allergies and, lo and behold, that is my real problem. Almost a
year after that, my health has improved remarkably. I, like others,
believe that IBS is just a handy catch-all for "we don't know what it is,
so we'll just call it IBS, throw medicine at you, and get you to go away."
My guess is that a great majority (if not all) IBS patients have some sort
of food allergy or intolerance and, knowing this and having information
about what to eat, they can cure themselves.
