I apologize that this isn't specifically gluten-related, but my
question is, how sensitive can a lactose-intolerant person be to
lactose?

I've been lactose intolerant for several years. I discovered this long
before I suspected any trouble with gluten, and it seems to be an
independent thing--I don't think I'm ever going to be able to tolerate
dairy again. As far as foods go, I've found that my best bet is to
avoid eating anything that contains any dairy at all.

But now I'm wondering about medications. I know lactose is commonly
used as a filler, but haven't worried about it, because I've never been
taking much of anything. Recently, my doctor has prescribed some stuff,
and I'm concerned about whether I need to worry about getting my pills
lactose-free. He doesn't seem concerned about it at all. So I'm
wondering, is the amount of lactose in a medication enough to make
someone sick?

I guess the simple answer is to try taking a lactose-containing pill
and see if I get sick. Unfortunately, I don't yet have all my GI
probems completely sorted out, so it's possible it could make me
somewhat ill, and I wouldn't be able to pinpoint the cause. Besides, if
it would make me sick, I'd rather spare myself the bathroom time.

As always, thanks so much for your help.
