On Sept. 3 George Spanos referred to:

>>some correlation between CD and certain autoimmune disorders such as
lupus, scleroderma, diabetes, etc. Does anyone
have statistics on this? Is the correlation still valid for those with CD
but who are gluten-free? <<

The statistics for Type I diabetes has been established perhaps because the
diagnosis of Type I is pretty unambiguous and because they're so numerous:

0.5% of the US general population are Type Is

4-10% of celiacs are Type Is.

Both are multi-genetic diseases that may be triggered by an infection or
other immune stimulating condition. I doubt that having my immune system
wipe out the insulin producing cells in my pancreas 40 some years ago would
have led to the same part of it reacting to gluten last year when I came
down with CD.

But I look forward to responses from others with better understanding. I'd
always assumed that having nearby genes for two conditions meant their
particular forms got separated less often in reproduction.
