The October 18th Food Expo has changed its location and date.  Please read below if you anticipating attending.

“2.5 Children Are Born Every Minute”

Saturday October 25th 11:00-1:00

                 Aspirus Wausau Hospital, Wausau, WI

It is estimated that 1 in 130 people – men, women and children – have celiac disease.  Celiac disease is a sensitivity to gluten, significantly reducing the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. October is Celiac Disease Awareness Month our theme refers to the fact that 30% of the United States population is genetically predisposed to carry the celiac gene.

Using this formula, it can be calculated that every minute approximately 2.5 children are born carrying this genetic predisposition. This staggering statistic simply displays the ever increasing need to promote awareness of celiac disease and strengthens the local support group to provide information regarding education, awareness and research for our members and individuals dealing with celiac disease.

Five out of six people with the disease have yet to be diagnosed by their physician, and are unnecessarily suffering uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing symptoms including bloating, diarrhea, weight loss, mouth ulcers, fatigue, or anemia. If undiagnosed, the disease can lead to more serious illnesses such as osteoporosis and bowel ca
ncer. Left untreated, it can result in chronic ill health and susceptibility to complications such as osteoporosis, infertility, other auto-immune diseases and an increased risk of malignancy, particularly lymphoma.

Once diagnosed, a diet free of wheat, barley, rye and oats will alleviate

the symptoms, usually within weeks, and will help prevent the onset of related illnesses. Group leader Jennifer Knauf says: “We are concerned that so many people in North Central Wisconsin could be undiagnosed, as celiac disease has a massive impact on daily life if you don’t know you have it. Our goals are to get people talking about celiac disease, with the hope of getting people diagnosed quicker than in the past.” There is no cure for Celiac the only reliable treatment is a strict lifelong diet free of wheat, barley, rye and oats.

Wausau’s Celiac Support Group for Adults and Children and Northwood’s Celiacs Group are raising awareness for under the campaign banner “2.5 Children Born Every Minute” to draw attention to the need for early diagnosis. Please join us Saturday October 25th in the afternoon from 11:00-1:00 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in the Medallion Restaurant. We hope to have up to 85 gluten free food vendors offer samples and/or literature for those that attend this free event. Any questions please us at: Wausau’s Celiac Support Group Leader Jennifer Knauf 715-298-4060 or at www.celiacinwi.org  or Julianne Karow ~Northwoods Celiac Group
