Hi Listmates,

I initially asked about good ways to do archive searches to get as correct
as possible information on the GF status of various foods. I mentioned
that I still didn't know about Hellman's mayonnaise as archive info was
conflicting and best foods had yet to return my call to Ontario.

Regarding listmates input on archive searches and GF status info in
general: the advice was to contact the manufacturer and refer to date of
product in question, area purchased in, and specific variation that you are
wanting to know about. I got a ton of respondents who said Hellman's is
GF-all from the USA. Several Canadians said some types (depending on
whether it is low fat, lite, regular) are NOT GF in Canada. When doing
summaries it might be useful to ask for this sort of info from people as
folks were trying to provide accurate info from the manufacturer but in
this case it appears to be specific to country of origin. I know this is a
possibility with a generic product like MSG (generic as in most don't
discuss name brands but do talk about Canada-USA differences in gluten
content) but I for one had thought a major name brand would be consistent
no matter where you lived. BTW, I never did get a reply from Best Foods in
Canada Head Office although several people gave me the status as they
understood it to be up here. The word seems to be that it's GF in the USA
but I would recommend checking with Best Foods specifically for what is
marketed in your area before using Canadian versions.

Hope this is helpful,
Lissy
