I wanted to give everyone an opportunity to know about the city
guide/booklets published by City Spirit Publications called "New York
Naturally" "Long Island Naturally" "New Jersey Naturally"
"Connecticut Naturally" "New Mexico Naturally" and "San Francisco Bay
Area Naturally" These guides are NOT necessarily written for celiacs,
but I have found them to be a tremendous resource for identifying drug
stores, health food stores, groceries, restaurants, and alternative
health care providers that service these cities and their surrounding
areas. I have found these guides to be a tremendous help when traveling
(and equally helpful when at home in NYC).

If your experience has been anything like mine, I've found that
"natural" food restaurants, groceries, etc. tend to have a higher level
of understanding and awareness about "special needs" in general,
including those required for celiac disease. When in an unfamiliar
place, I seek these locations out FIRST and these guides are full of
names, locations, phone numbers, and even special events. They are
usually distributed locally free of charge (cost is supported by
advertising) and can usually be found at health food stores, local
groceries, farmers markets, alternative healing stores, etc. The guides
are updated once or twice annually (each city-guide is on a different
schedule). For those traveling to any of the destinations listed above,
a copy of the "Naturally" publications can be requested ahead of time,
so that you can put it to work as soon as you arrive. The cost is
minimal: $5.00 for the first copy and $2.50 for additional copies. The
phone number for City Publications is 1 800/486-4794 and they have
offices on both the East and West coasts.
