Dear all,
This is a question for the medical folks on the list, and/or
for any of the rest of you who might be in the know:
Does anyone know what the relation is between cd ('non-tropical')
and tropical sprue? Can tropical sprue trigger cd in a genetically
prone individual? Or can what gets diagnosed as tropical sprue also
be cd?
From what I've been told, tropical sprue is thought to be
bacterially caused or triggered, and NOT involve gluten intolerance,
although all the other malabsorption problems are the same, including
villi damage.
But if you're diagnosed with tropical sprue (because of where
you'd been traveling, etc.) but gluten intolerance IS a factor, and
all the x-rays, tests, biopsies, etc. show villi damage, could this
mean a diagnosis of cd as well?
     Any insight much appreciated!

Thanks very much,
Nancy in S. Illinois ([log in to unmask])
