I am somewhat surprised by the tenor of most letters I have been reading
regarding this lawsuit. Frankly, the fact that most of the writers are decrying
the lawsuit due to concerns that this will frighten other retail food places
into not working with the Celiac Community is scary in and of itself.
First off, we are consumers. We have the right to have informed consent to
know what we are ingesting. We are the customer. If anything, I think it puts
these places on guard to know what is in the products they dish out to the
public. If this was E-Coli, there would be no if ands or buts about it.
Secondly, there is a liability issue. They probably are better off with this
being sought now, instead of when some poor kid with a serious allergy goes
into shock, and they would have that to contend with.
I am a disability advocate, as well as a person with Celiac, and some other
autoimmune diseases. I am also a person who due to my job travel a lot. If I
order food, I try to speak authoritatively about my issues, and I want to know
that they know what they are serving me. I am spending my good money, and I
expect to be treated with respect, and not disdain. Mc Donald's needs to get
on top of this now!
