Hi to all friends on the list.....

I waited until I received what I think is the last response to my question about calcium absorption and osteoporosis. I sure received a bunch of tips from all you great folks out there! In summary, here's the suggestions:

!) Use a liquid calcium supplement, which is more digestible.

2) Always take a cal supplement that contain magnesium and vitamin D.

3)See an endocrinologist about the bone density problem and get his/her suggestions.

4) Check with a gastroenterologist to make sure you don't have low stomach acid. Not enough acid in the stomach can inhibit absorbtion of the supplement.

5) Use digestive enzymes.

6) Make sure your calcium is always taken in divided doses. No more than 500 mg. can be taken in by the body at one time. Also, take calcium with meals.

7) Along with weight bearing exercise, like walking, add free weight training.

8) Read "Going Against the Grain" by Melissa Diane Smith. Pgs. 55 and 56 deal with calcium.

9) For women: use natural progesterone cream. Dr. John R. Lee wrote a book on why this helps in preventing osteoporsis. "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause."

10)Too much fiber can inhibit cal absorption.

11) Lots of suggestions to use Fosamax (something I'm trying to avoid doing at this point)

12) Get calcium derived from coral (Whole Foods is against selling this at this time, according to a vitamin rep at one of their stores in Austin, TX. It's an environmental issue.)

13) Take elemental calcium.
