Thank you for the many responded about Wellbutrin.
I got at least 10, all of which said it's safe for celiacs
Answers varied from people who have checked with the manufacturer
(not easy to get info, but eventually did) to people who have been on
it and that are very reactive to any gluten and have had no problem
with it.
I didn't get one response saying otherwise.
As far as a generic, or any generic...PLEASE be careful and, in as
many cases possible get the brand name. Specifically with
Wellbutrin's generic...which after 2 months of a complete personality
change and terrible thoughts and behavior, I came to find out this
can be common with the generic in this drug (also applies to when you
change doses with these types of drugs). Found this out from online
research, blogs as well as pharmacists.
I mention it b/c I know a lot of people with celiac, or long
untreated celiac can have depression and may be on antidepressants
for depression and PMDD...but this info is good to pass on to anyone
who is on these types of drugs. I made several calls to my dr., got
the whole gate-keeping deal and eventually doubted myself and lived
with horrible side effects for 2 months that presented like bipolar,
as well as marked increased anxiety and poor judgement.
There's something called a 'step edit" that if your dr. writes a note
saying you can't take generics or have 'failed' on it that your
insurance company "may" cover. Depends on your plan, so you'd have
to check into it-I know Aetna has a step edit procedure. From my
understanding, generics can be made in many facilities and you never
know which co. made yours each time you refill. It can be %10-%20
different from the ingredients in the brand name. This often is with
the fillers. So variations can occur.
I'm not an expert on this...but definitely have had bad experiences
with generics in terms of gluten, as well as other problems, and have
talked to many others who have as well.
Hope this helps!
