While looking through the National Enquirers at the beauty shop today, I
happened onto an article in the 6 July issue of interest to us. It wasn't
about celiac disease but summarized the findings of Dr. Cade, professor of
medicine at the U of Florida in Gainesville. He found that having people
with autism and schizophrenia stop eating gluten and dairy products cured the
great majority of the people he tested. He discovered the connection with a
patient of his with both schizophrenia and kidney disease. Whenever this
person had a dialysis treatment, his schizophrenia would vanish. He finally
figured out that the dialysis cleared the casein (dairy) and gliaden from
the blood. The doctor's study is to be published in a medical journal. I
have no idea if these people would test positive for cd. The National
Enquirer is not a very classy publication but any press about the connection
between eating gluten and various illnesses will probably help somebody. I
ended up with my diagnosis of cd after reading an article in Prevention
magazine.
