The object of this posting is to raise a discussion rather than reply to

I have recently read that genetically engineered rice is being grown
extensively. Among other things, a gene from barley has been 'inserted'
to increase resistance to drought. If this causes the rice to produce
gluten, the implications for celiacs are extremely serious.
In the European Union at least, the regulations governing labelling and
labelling practice offer the consumer no guarantee whatsoever.
