Thanks for the 6 responses regarding the correlation between the celiacs &
diabetes. The summaries are as follows:

1. A listmember was first diagnosed with diabetes & then CD. Diabetes
usually occurs from malabsorption problems. Going on celiac diet resulted in
losing weight & then the disappearance of diabetes.

2. IDDM:insulin dependent diabetes (child onset) can have a celiacs
correlation & is autoimmune related. One condition does not cause the other,
both conditions are just found in the same population. NIDDM:non-insulin
dependent (adult onset) has no celiacs correlation.

3. 13 yr. old daughter has both conditions. They believe that one triggered
the other. Her slow digestion caused spikes in blood sugar. Now that she's
GF, there are fewer problems.

4. Celiacs, diabetes, Hashmoto's (hypothyroidism), Addison's (adrenal),
lupus & other autoimmune conditions are statistically related. Having 1
condition increases risk of having others. There are no cause & effect
relationships though ... just an increased chance of genetic predisposition.

5. Type 1 Diabetes is common in celiac community. Onset appears more in the
very young (occurrence is 1 in 20 in celiac population vs. 1 in 200 in
general population). Type 2 Diabetes has same occurrence in both celiac &
general population (1 in 25).

6. A listmember has identical twins. They learned that when 1 twin has
diabetes, the other twin has a 50% chance of occurrence. Whereas, when a
twin has celiacs, the occurrence is 70% chance in the other twin.

Thanks for the input!
