I just read an article in today's NY Times (Nov.7), in the first page of
Business Section, "Genetic Soybeans Alarm Europe". It talks of concerns of
the quality of genetically engineered soybeans. Naturally, as a celiac, I
looked for any mention of possible effect on gf diets. That aspect wasn't
directly aaddressed. However one portion caught my eye, and I'm asking the
scientists on the List to pick it up and see if there's any ramifications for
us guys. This item says "With soybeans second only to corn as a cash crop in
the US, biotechnology engineers have experimented for years to produce a
higher-yield variety. Monsanto's eventual solution was to transplant a gene
from another plant to make soybeans resistant to its best-selling herbicide,
Roundup." So here you go, our dear scientists, give us your analysis of
this alien gene. It may turn out to be nothing of concern to celiacs, which
would be great...and worth ruling out.
