Mr. Rodgers:
I was diagnosed with CD in the mid-1940's, back when it was
believed you either died from malnutrion or just outgrew it.
I "outgrew it" and was supposedly cured.
For the next 40 years + had no major medical problems, nor
digestive or bowel problems. Then around 1992 I began with
occasional diarreha, and sometimes mild cramps, which I was able to
control with anti-diarrehal medication.
Over the next couple of years things got progressively worse, to
the point where I was not able to control the almost constant gas,
diarreha, and - at times- severe cramps.
I won't go into the all too typical traumatic story of trying to
get a proper medical diagnosis here in the states (even with Celiac
Disease shown as part of my medical record), but eventually one "so
called" G&I specialist finally, upon my insistence, looked up CD in
the medical books and called me back to inform me that, in fact, CD
was genetic and that's what I had. His prescription - "Don't eat
bread".
So from my experience only, not as anyone educated in the medical
field, I believe those doctors who state that "Once a Celiac -
Always a Celiac".
