I have to reply to this letter re irritable bowel syndrome. Before
I was diagnosed cd I was given all of the above mentioned meds. Since
being diagnosed in 1958, I have only needed something when I accidentally
got some gluten. One day one of my smart sons said, "Mom, Stop the
digestion!" We thought about it, I had just eaten something with gluten in
it. Together we decided on a huge dose of bicarbonate of soda. I took at
least a tablespoonful in water, No reaction. Ever since I have done this
with excellant results. It used to take a month to six weeks to completely
heal after ingestion of gluten. Now the diarrhea stops in 24 hours and the
pain also. Last mistake was in November while at the mercy of a hospital
doing surgery on my eyes. Don't know if it was food or medication. Was
real sick before I could get the soda bicarb and was very dehydrated. A
friend brought the soda about midnight and by morning all was calm. No
pain either. Needless to say I carry this with me when I travel.
A word of caution: If one has some other condition such as ulcers,
one should not take baking soda in large doses without checking with your
doctor.
A word of cheer for celiacs everywhere, I have been diagnosed for
over 35 years, am in wonderful health, and my family is convinced that I
am going to live forever.
The list is new to me and already I feel like I have friends who
understand this condition. There is only one other person in my community
that knows she has celiac disease. We help each other.
Thanks to everybody,
Janet Easton
