Has anyone else heard of this product - it is an edible
packaging wrap, similar to Saran Wrap or other plastic wraps but
made from wheat. It is made by a U.S. company, Polymer Films,
working with 2 U.K. firms, Enak and Cambridge Consultants. The
article I have on it was published in the U.K.
Because the wrap is wheat-based, it is edible and thus
very attractive to food manufacturers and packagers. The film does
not break down on contact with room-temperature moisture, but will
disolve into the food when heated. This way, it can keep separate
the pastry from pie filling and the pastry won't get soggy. Other
layered foods would also benefit from being separated by this film.
Other applications discussed in the article include drug
delivery, as a casing for pills, or a soluble solution for wound
dressings.
Has anyone else heard of this? Is it commercially
available or just in development ? Are current labelling laws
(world-wide) adequate for us to know when this product is being
used?
