QSL, I figured that it was something like that. Various levels of
subscription to QRZ provide database access, but I don't think that a paid
subscription is required for logging programs to retrieve their data.

Usually it would be through an API application program interface.
Software developers would use this programming interface and write it in
to their software so it can interrogate qrz in the background.
