At one time I could only get wireless connections as the landlord did not
allow any cables run in the building. I prefer to use my gigabit wired
connection as it is more secure.

I think it is done that way to cover all possible uses. Some people might
need or prefer to use wireless, even for their desktops. If they do need it,
it is there. Laptops usually also have an ethernet connection, for those
times when it is appropriate to use it. It just makes the machine more
versatile.
