Andrew Kirkpatrick of Adobe asked me to post this information about the accessibility of the webinar next Wednesday, June 17th to people with disabilties, in response to a questions posed by Norm Combs.

Response:
Norm raises an important point, and I would like to encourage people to attend to see how we are able to accommodate users in this webinar. The online meeting room is going to be used for a few purposes:
1) sharing PowerPoint slides and sharing the presenter's desktop for demonstrations.
2) providing a voice over IP option for listening to the talk.
3) providing real-time closed captioning
4) providing an interface for submitting questions.

To address access to #'s 1, 2, 3, and 4, there is some support for direct accessibility in the Connect meeting product and some support provided via equivalent facilitation.

For #1, Blind users will not be able to navigate the PowerPoint slides or navigate the presenter's desktop, since screen sharing is not accessible in any application. However, the slides will be provided for download at the time of the presentation, allowing any user to read the content of the slide deck. In addition, the presenter (Charlie Pike of the Paciello Group) is experienced at presenting to users who are blind or visually impaired and will do a great job of making sure that the visual context provided by the slide content and during demonstrations is incorporated into his spoken commentary.

For #2, All users can log into the Connect meeting and select voice over IP from either the meeting room menu or by using a keyboard shortcut to toggle the audio.

For #3, the captions are provided for deaf or hard of hearing users. Users can turn the captions off individually, select small/medium/large font size, and choose standard or inverted contrast.

For #4, the interface for submitting questions is accessible for keyboard and mouse users, but not for assistive technology users. During the meeting we will also provide an email address to submit questions to as well as providing opportunities to ask questions directly.

I hope that this answers the question Norm raised. Live meeting accessibility relies both on the technology used and the presenters using a system. Connect has limitations that Adobe is working to address in upcoming versions, but I believe that users will find that the webinar is delivered in an accessible manner.

Thanks,
AWK
