Thanks to all who replied with good advice, most of which was already familiar to us, as we are used to touring and know to pack protein bars, tinned fish, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, etc. (Actually in Europe it is usually easy to get vacuum-packed smoked fish which keeps well unrefrigerated until opened for a day or two.)
