To recap, I checked the Lipton Onion Soup Mix ingredients at the grocery store the other day and found they now included Autolyzed Yeast (Barley). I did not buy the product as I still had one package at home with no AY(Barley) listed.

Thank you to everyone who replied to my post. Most of those responding had used, or were using the soup mix. Most were not aware of the ingredient change to Autolyzed Yeast (Barley). A few people had found it and had stopped using the product. One person found the same ingredient change in Knorr Vegetable Soup Mix.

This morning I called Unilever/Lipton Customer Support. I explained I was part of a large population with Celiac disease/gluten enteropathy and would be reporting back to an online information sharing group. I learned that all questions about one of their products must be directed to a specific barcode on the package in question. All I had was the barcode (413620) from the "old" package which did not include the AY(Barley) ingredient, so that really didn't help much.

I asked about the difference in ingredients between the soup mix made in Canada vs those made in the USA. The package I have (barcode 413620) was made in Canada and distributed from New Jersey. The rep said anything made in Canada to be distributed in the USA must meet FDA regs. However, the same product made in Canada for the Canadian market (which would have a different barcode and not have to meet FDA regs - obviously) could have completely different ingredients. And, it could be sold in the USA if the grocer was bringing the product into the US for sale (she asked if I lived close to Canada - I'm in Oregon, so I guess it's not too big a stretch to think that could happen). She could not give me any information on the made in Canada for Canadian market product ingredients because I don't have a barcode for that.

What the rep did say is that Lipton Recipe Secrets Onion Recipe Soup
& Dip Mix, in general, is now on their list of Gluten-Containing
products. Bottom line is I need to go back to the grocery store, write down the barcode of the package in question with Autolyzed Yeast (Barley) and make a second call to Unilever in order to get any definitive information. So, once I get that accomplished I'll send a second Summary to the list.

For me, this episode clearly emphasizes the need to read every label, every time...no matter what.
