Hello listmates:

My original question was how many people out there have vomiting as a
symptom of Celiac Disease, even when gluten free. Let me tell you, I have
gotten 85 responses and counting!

   1. The overwhelming answer is YES!
   2. Most everyone said they vomit when they accidentally ingest gluten.
   3. Many said that vomiting was the reason CD was found (as in our case)
but that it went away with a GF diet.
   4. Some said vomit would accompany diarrhea, and on it's own might be
   something else.
   5. One said there should be NO vomit if the diet is followed.
   6. One told me my duodenum and pyloric valve were so irritated that they
would spasm closed whenever a little bit of gluten started to leave the
stomach. If the bottom valve won't open, the top one won't close.
   7. Another said after an accidental gluten : Option 1)- if she has the
time to be "out of it" for a couple of
days, she will take Phenergan. This drug makes her sleep a lot and she
   feels
groggy for a couple of days. Option 2)- She can take Zophran. This drug
   was
developed for minimizing the nausea of cancer patients on chemo. It melts
   on
the tongue. The reason there is a choice is that the Zofran is about
   $10.00
a pill. If nothing works, she has to go to the ER for IV Phenergan. If
there is no intervention she does not stop throwing up, is
extremely nauseous for more than 24 hours and is in intense pain until
   the gluten passes.
   8. One person's doctor said it depends where in the small intestine that
there is the damage. If its at the connection to the stomach then vomiting
could very well be a symptom -- further down would be diarrhea.
   9. One person continued to have acid reflux after going GF as well as
exercise induced nausea. They suggested eating smaller amounts more
often. You don't need to cut out a whole type of food, but an
   anti-inflammatory diet
   10. Studies have also shown that most gf people's symptoms that happen
within half an hour or so of eating gluten are largely psychosomatic, as the
gluten has not yet had a chance to interact anywhere it can cause problems.
Nausea and headaches are the most common of those, similar to panic attack
symptoms - just our subconscious telling us we think something is wrong by
hyping up our sympathetic nervous system. Even knowing this, this person
finds that symptoms of accidental gluten are far more severe when found out
right away vs. a day or two later.
   11. Allow at least 3-4 weeks for adjustment after a dietary change before
really judging how you feel. A drastic change in diet will usually trigger
some GI symptoms, but they will pass as your gut adjusts. Your mind needs
to adjust to the point that you aren't paying close attention to how you
feel after every meal so you aren't worrying about it all the time.
   12. Someone said she will vomit every time she gets hungry if she doesn't
eat immediately, but has gotten better on GF diet
   13. A few people had a few different things to look into that are often
associated with CD or in addition to it : Intestinal bacterial
overgrowth or another bacteria called H Pylori. Also Gastroparesis,
Addisons Disease, reflux or pancreas. Also, other foods, such as fructose,
corn, dairy, soy, or medication that might unknowingly have gluten in it.
   14. Another person has nausea, and at times vomiting. Her Gastro Dr. told
her to take 1 prilosec every am before eating. It seems to be working for
   her.
   15. You might consider an all meat diet. If the vomiting stops, then add
one new food each morning on an empty stomach, in addition to the meat. It
can be a bit of an ordeal, but it can also eliminate the problem. The meat
should be fatty so it provides adequate energy.
   16. Many people have been to many doctors and feel they seem to know
much more than most doctors know about the subject. Many people had
diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea, mouth ulcers, vitamin deficiencies, and
neurological problems before going gluten and dairy free.
   17. As a final note: Loved this from one member upon eating out and
getting accidental gluten: "I figure either miscommunication or cross
   contamination, but definitely regurgitation"!

Best wishes to everyone for better health in 2011!!
