When I requested information about GF in Normandy a couple of months ago, I
only received two replies. One person suggested that I contact the
A.F.D.I.A.G. (The French Celiac Society). Their phone number is +33 1 56 08 08
22, Fax: +33 1 56 08 08 42. They are at 2 Rue de Vouille, 75015 Paris,
France. Unfortunately I had done that previously and they have no list of GF
restaurants/accommodations in Normandy. Another person said that they had
managed to find something to eat in a local cafe. We also found restaurant
staffs to be helpful. We handed over our French GF restaurant card,
waited for suggestions, and found a number of interesting dishes. The only time
we had trouble was going out for dinner on a Sunday evening. We were
staying in Vire and all of the regular restaurants had closed by 6. Evidently
they eat their main meal during the day on Sundays. All we could find were
bars and pizza shops, so my son settled for a salad at the pizza place.
LECLERC supermarket in Vire has a good selection of prepackaged GF
products, such as cookies, baguettes, pasta. We rented a cottage near Vire for a
week and cooked several dinners there. Since there were 6 of us, it was
much more economical and we definitely knew what we were eating. We saw
LECLERC supermarkets in other towns, but since we didn't stop in any of them, I
can't confirm their GF selections. By the way if you're planning a trip
to Normandy, we found Vire to be a good central location with beautiful
countryside and the beaches, Bayeaux, and Mont St. Michel are all within about
an hour's drive.
Bon yoyage!
Carolyn
