I asked about places to eat and/or purchase GF foods in Bend, OR and
Sunriver resort. Thanks to all who replied, especially to Lynelle who lives
in Bend and went the extra mile in getting me the information I need.
Here's what I've learned from everyone:
---------------
There is a Baha Fresh in Bend on Third Street - most of their food is GF.
Also a natural foods store on the same street and Fred Meyer, a huge grocery
with a GF section. Just came back from Bend; took a great canoe trip with
Wanderlust Tours - highly recommend them.
---------
I do know that in Sun River when I go, I prepare all my meals as there is no
place to eat there. Unless you go to the lodge and eat for a price. Also I
take my food. If you are just planning to eat whole foods, like meat,
veggies and cheese it is ok,but anything else you are taking a BIG chance,
which I am not willing to do...
...In Bend, you are more likely to get a good meal and be able to eat GF.
Their are many stores there, like Fred Meyer is one that you can buy GF
processed foods. I am sure you can look in the yellow pages for a health
food store.
-----------
I grew up in Bend and go back every summer to see family. In Bend
Meranda's can handle GF with instructions...also the Thai place near
that..Thoomi's I think is the name..say no soy sauce..only fish sauce..Shop
for food at Wild Oats...look for GF scones with wild berries made by
Angelina's from Sisters Oregon. If you drive to Sisters for scenery etc.
stop at Angelina's bakery for bread..cookies etc. {fabulous homemade GF] her
bread might be at Wild Oats by now too. The usual chain restuarants which
take care are around and any upscale restuarant will have a chef who gets
it. Have a ball and give my love to the Deschutes. The Pine Tavern is a
must stop and I think thet get it...also the Deschutes Microbrewery is a
must and they usually get it.
------------
Sweet Baby Jane's Bakery, North Hwy 97 (behind the Tom Tom's Restaurant)
541-549-9122. Contact: Angelique At Northern Lights Bakery by Friday before
12n to place your gluten free order to be picked up on Tuesday after 2pm
The Cascade Culinary Institute (at Central Oregon Community College) Mon,
Tue, Wed, open to the public for lunch. You must call ahead for a
reservation. They take special requests and charge only $8.00 for the meal.
-----------
Zydeco is a GF restaurant in Bend. I guess the owners have another
restaurant there too but I'm not sure of the name. Have not been to either
but they get good reviews.
-------------
1. McGrath's Fish House, 3118 N. Hwy 97
2. Outback, 1180 S.E. 3rd Str
3, Zydeco Kitchen, 1085 S.E. 3rd Str
-------------
Zydeco on HWY 97 S X the street from Outback are the only two restaurants
that have GF menus. However, if you have a restaurant card you can show it
and be well treated every place except ERNESTO's Italian.
Guiseppe's is a favorite and even has GF pasta 923 NW Bond 389-8899 or take
your own and tell cook it.
McGrath's Fish house is my favorite since my son Lynn is a manager there;
ask for him or if it is a cool day, have the Fisherman's stew--it's GF and
great.
Scanlon's at the Athletic Club has GF soups if no pasta is in them. Always
ask and show your card.
Natures' Store in the Wagner Mall has a great selection of GF foods plainly
marked.
Country Store across from Bob Thomas Cheverolet has a good selection most
of the time.
Wild Oats is East of town by Costco has a good selection + fresh GF bread
from our Sister's Bakery -- Angelines.
Lynn's days off are Tuesday and Wednesdays so naturally he wouldn't be at
McGraths. I haven't heard from my contact about the Sunriver Restaurant
opening. I would suggest you call ahead to any restaurant and ask if they
would provide a GF meal for a family reunion. Try Guiseppi's at
541-389-8899 I have heard that Bella Cucina Cafe in SunRiver 541--593-6440
has GF options.
Just talked to Chrisalas Stoddard at the Bella Cucina Italian Restaurant
541-593-6440; she is the Celiac that has just bought the place. I hear it
is great.

Redmond, OR has a natural foods store that stocked lots of GF food
---------------
We had a reunion at Sun River a couple of years ago. There is a grocery
market in Sun River. They do have some GF products, I remember GF pancake
mix and brownie mix. Could be others. In Bend there is Cosco, their
roasted chickens are GF. They also have several entrees in the freezer or
chilled section that are safe- i.e. Mexican chicken alfredo, I think it is
called. Wild Oats, Trader Joes are there also. Wild Oats has many GF
items, T.J.'s some also. If I remember right, Wild Oats & Cosco are very
near each other. We only ate out once at the Tavern, old historic
restaurant in downtown Bend, I had salad.

Thanks again to everyone!
