Thank you to those who responded to my question regarding calcium fortified OJ and the possibility of gluten contamination. Basically, if the container says 100% juice, then it's gluten-free. Even with calcium and vitamin D, the juice may still be 100% so it's gluten-free. I called Tropicana and this is what they told me. Here are the responses I received:
1 person said people may actually react to the milk protein
2 people said that the added calcium may have binders or fillers that could contain wheat
1 person wondered about the food labeling laws and why the orange juice isn't labeled as containing wheat if there is wheat
2 people said that the non-100% juice may contain flavorings or fillers that haven't been tested for gluten, so the companies are not going to say for certain that the juice is gluten-free.
It's best to call the company directly like I did the other day in the grocery store with Tropicana. One of you wondered why I don't just drink regular OJ, and it's because I'm pregnant and I'm trying to get extra calcium into my diet.
