Can anyone advise on medications to help prevent/treat reflux problems in a fellow UK coeliac who has to take Fosamax (alendronate) for osteoporosis?
She is 57, dx coeliac 2 years ago after a history of gastric & reflux problems, previous NSAID use, gallbladder removal & hiatus hernia. She is careful about taking Fosamax in the correct way is not on any other medication. Currently, when it becomes sore she takes antacids (Gaviscon) and misses a week or two of the Fosamax to let things settle.
NB She is not looking for "advice" on the pros and cons of biphosphonates, but ways to take it without further damaging her oesophagus.
Incidentally I have already suggested that she look into the question of low stomach acid (and perhaps reads Why Stomach Acid is Good for You). Clearly someone with a history of GERD would be very cautious about trying any acid supplements, but is taking Fosamax a definite contraindication - like NSAIDs?
