In the latest issue (July/August 2005) of Digestive Health & Nutrition
there is a 4-page article entitled "The Many Faces of Celiac Disease," by a
medical writer. This magazine tends to have articles about IBS, IBD and GERD
issues, as well as many advertisements about products for these conditions,
but in the last year there have been about three articles about Celiac
Disease -- finally! The editorial foreward mentioned that CD is an
important and still under-recognized disease in the U.S. "Contrary to what
was once believed, this condition can present for the first time in
adulthood (even in the elderly), rather than being confined to childhood."
The Medical Editor said he was "grateful to Drs. Sheila Crowe (associate
professor of internal medicine at the University of Virginia Digestive
Health Center of excellent in Charlottesville and once a medical GI advisor
to our Houston chapter) and Ben Gold (an editor) for their expert comments
on this condition in adults and children. Strict adherence to a gluten-free
diet is still the appropriate treatment for this condition. As discussed in
the article, this diet can sometimes be tricky to follow. Telling a small
child that he or she cannot indulge in sandwiches, cakes, cookies, most
candies and 'fast foods' is a daunting prospect for any parent (let alone
physician or dietitian). Joining one of the many available support groups
is beneficial to both parents and patients facing teh difficulties
associated with a gluten-free lifestyle."
Two recipes attributed to Whole Foods and Lee Tobin were included as
well. The American Celiac Society (wrong address), CDF, DSA, GIG, and GF
Living were listed as resources, as well as NASPGHAN and
www.celiachealth.org . I am glad to see more awareness spread into another
population! I hope those readers with Irritable Bowel Syndrome who are not
doing well will read this article and ask their gastroenterologists to test
them for CD. Unfortunately, many people are in denial and would rather pop
a pill rather than change their lifestyle and gain back their health.
