Alfanoose, at 8 Maiden Lane, just off Broadway, is, in my opinion, the
best Middle-Eastern restaurant south of 42nd street. It is an easy
walk from either Fulton St or Wall St stops on the 2, 3, 4, and 5 IRT
lines.
The food is prepared carefully from fresh ingredients. While it is not
a gluten-free environment (pita's, various forms of wheat
grain salads), the owner will tell you which dishes do not contain
wheat. I was sorry to hear that their fantastic Tabouli does contain a
small amount of wheat; before I went off gluten products, that was a
favorite dish there.
I can recommend the Homous, Baba Ganouge, Stuffed Grape leaves, and
Shish Tawook (charcoal grilled cubes of marinated chicken breast).
Please check with the owner/chef as you order just to be sure -- I
have checked most, but not all, of these items with him. Note that I
do not yet know if I have
celiac sprue, or some other disorder; so I am also avoiding
all fried foods (sigh, the best Falafel in Manhattan).
They do deliver in the vicinity; call (212) 528-4669
