Thanks to everyone who responded to our question on the GF status of soy
milk. Following is a summary of your responses.
1)Silk, 8th continent, Trader Jo's, Pacific brand, Costco's brand, Silk by
Whitewave are all GF. Some manufacturers state this on the label.
2) Despite that, some varieties and some brands use barley malt in their soy
milk formulas and, therefore, are not GF. One person mentioned that rice
syrup often includes the malt ingredient.
3) Several of you mentioned that many celiacs are allergic to soy milk and
other soy products. They experience the same or similar reaction to soy as
they do to gluten.
I apparently fall into the last category. Although I enjoyed soy milk, I
had many untoward reactions. So I have stopped drinking it -- substituting
Ensure -- and feel much better.
The old, but never overly used, adage of "please read the label on any
product" applies to soy milk as well as all food items we ingest as celiacs.
Thanks again for your many helpful responses.
