i posted a few days ago on multi i've been using for a year that I
really like. It's called Natrol My Favorite Multiple Original and
comes in iron (original) and no iron ('no iron':) formulas and both
come in tablets (4/day) or caps (6/day).
here are a couple of responses I got back:
<<The women's and men's multi-vitamin at GNC is free of
everything!!>>
I think she was saying that not only is it GF, SF, DF, but it's also
corn free and free of other common allergens.
i looked up the URL for that multi:
Preventive Nutrition Women's Multiple Formula and found that, yes in
deed, it is free of everything, including significant amounts of some
vitamins and minerals. no really, sarcasm aside, it's a fine lower
dose multi, but it just depends on what a person needs.
while the Natrol My Favorite Multiple tablets are four for a daily
dose, the above mentioned GNC multi is three per day.
the difference though is significant.
Natrol: 400 IU vitamin D GNC women's: 200 IU vitamin D (huge
issue for everyone but esp celiacs. the vitamin D deficiency problem
is epidemic www.cholecalciferol-council.com )
Natrol 400 IU vitamin E GNC: 100 IU vitamin E (most research on
various issues indicates 400 IU is the optimal dose)
Natrol 1000 mg calcium GNC: 250 mg calcium (very few of us are
getting adequate calcium under optimal conditions.....but heck, most
of us don't eat optimally, and very few us of have *optimal* gut
integrity. most of us need to maximize calcium)
both Natrol and GNC have 18 mg iron (unless you use the Natrol iron
free). However, Natrol has all of it's iron in the very best form
possible: ferrochel amino acid chelate. GNC has part in this
fabulous form of iron and part in a less expensive, not as well
absorbed form of iron. most of us have been deprived of iron over
the long haul b/c of gut damage and need the very best iron we can get)
Natrol has 20 mg zinc. GNG women's has 7.5 mg zinc defiiciency
and insufficiency are widespread problems
Natrol has 400 mg magnesium GNC womens has 100 mg. the usrda is
400 and magnesium deficiency is also widespread ( www.krispin.com )
The list goes on, but those are just some of the comparisons I could
do from memory. Oh, and there's the price. The GNC women's multi is
$19.99 for 40 days from drugstore.com
The Natrol is $10.99 from iherb.com (plus 10% off at checkout) So
assuming free shipping for both, it's the difference between
GNC multi: $182.95 for a year's supply. Natrol My Favorite
Multiple tablets: $118.70
Natrol saves $64 or so dollars in the course of a year and gives you
more calcium, E, D and zinc, necessatating purchasing less supplements
in addition to the multi. However, if a person doesn't need the extra
zinc, E, calcium or D, then it doesn't matter what a deal it is, it's
not the right multi for them. More is not necessarily better,
'enough' for a given person is what's right for them.
in that same vein of thinking, if a person can't tolerate a vitamin,
it also doesn't matter how much of something it has in it, or how
inexpensive it is......again it has to work for the individual.
just looking at my Natrol bottle:
no yeast, wheat, corn, milk, gluten, artificial colors or flavors,
added sugar, starch or preservatives.
Cool!
Someone also mentioned that they need an iodine free multi. here's a
great one:
http://store.yahoo.com/iherb/al3.html
It's the twinlab allergy multi. the above link shows just the values
for two capsules, but the full dose is six caps. when taken at the
full dose (3 caps, 2x per day) it's really great supplemental
nutrition. (only 600 mg calcium, but everything else is right up
there)
make sure to take any multi in the middle of a significant meal.
