I wrote about a girl who has celiac symptoms and her doctor who "knows"
without testing that she is not Celiac. I ask, "Is
it possible to have irritable bowel or leaky gut type symptoms in the
lower GI as well as being Celiac?"
* The most common answer was, YES! (15)
* Eleven people said she should get a doctor who knows about CD. (11)
* Ten people responded who have both CD and lower GI problems as
well (10)

*Diseases related to CD* Information is available on the following website:

Leaky gut, candida and many other things, go along with CD, because
your digestive tract is so out of kilter. The fact
that she is thin, has ongoing diarrhea and other gastrointestinal
problems, gee, what does this guy need to do the test? And really, what
have they got to lose by doing this test? If she doesn't have it, that
is great, but I bet you she does.
Personally, I have come to believe, that most of the so called *tummy*
problems really are CD and they have just given these names for all the
symptoms that go along with it. : - )

Is it possible to have irritable bowel or leaky gut type symptoms in the
lower GI as well as being Celiac? It's not only possible but it highly probable.
~~~
I was diagnosed with IBS for about 15 years before I ... was checked for
Celiac and did have it with both endoscopy and blood tests. So yes, you
can have gastric symptoms and diarrhea and be told you have IBS.
~~~
Celiac Disease occurs only in the small intestine, as it damages the
lining (villi) of the intestinal wall, causing malabsorption, etc...As
for your friend, I would recommend that she get a second opinion. ...
I was misdiagnosed as having irritable bowel syndrome and still
continued to have major GI problems until I went to a new doctor who
tested me for celiac by an endoscopy (upper GI). I truly believe
irritable syndrome means nothing, and should not be considered a
diagnosis of any kind. ...
~~~
I have IBS as well as celiac disease and a hiatal hernia to boot.
~~~
Many Doctors unfortunately believe that if you have one disease
effecting the large intestine, then celiac is not even possible.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh yes! I have IBS and also have Celiacs. Much to my dismay. I was
diagnosed with IBS years ago and Celiac just last Oct. I thought maybe
the IBS would go away but it is still there. I know eating gluten can
make the IBS worse. I would advise them to switch doctors or push to
have an upper endoscopy or the blood test. I had a CAT scan of my
abdomen and nothing
showed up so my doctor did an upper endoscopy (the only test I had not
had) and there it was.
... Dr. Rudert, a renowned GI doctor from Atlanta said at a conference I
went to, "there is no such thing as irritable bowel syndrome. They are
all undiagnosed celiacs." So, yes, those symptoms can be celiac. Tell
your friend to research and get another MD.
It is difficult to believe a physician would say that diarrhea was a
lower GI problem. ... There are lots of docs that are well trained in
internal medicine. I am sure your friend can find one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The question is, how does the doctor know that her problems are lower
GI? You don't say exactly what her doctor thinks the problem is. Perhaps
on the biopsy of the colon he found something, such as colitis, in which
case he is probably right. On the other hand, if he is trying to tell
her she has IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome, as opposed to IBD, which is
something different and includes Crohn's Disease and colitis), he cannot
say that unless he has ruled out everything else, including Celiac
Disease. So you don't really give us enough information here. ... if he
has pathological evidence for his opinion based on whatever tests have
been done, then that is a different story.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was biopsy diagnosed as celiac in 1976 ... twice repeated since. I
have since been diagnosed as having microscopic colitis ... an apparent
offshoot of serious damage in the usual place in the small intestine.
If your friend's doctor ... will not test the daughter I would suggest
the common sense approach of finding another doctor. A very prominent
GI here in the Dallas area says he can tell a celiac "by looking at
you." Can you believe that? One of the biggest problems we have is
doctors who are not current and will not properly test.
Yes, yes, yes, yes ,yes. ...My wife still has IBS, even though she's a very well controlled coeliac. Of course losing the severe physiological stress of CD made her IBS much less
bad but any good solid stressy situation and she's off again. (I have IBS without being a coeliac).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Doc told me that I have Celiac with IBS symptoms. He stated that as
the body heals the intestines ability to digest foods would increase so
that the ibs symptoms would disapate (I doubt that ALL of the symptoms
would completely go away). I have found that to be true . I have only
been GF since 06/01/03. I have been able to sparingly eat foods that I
wasn't able to eat in awhile.
~~~~~
I have both celiac and ulcerative colitis so yes it is possible to have IBS and celiac.
~~~~
Yes, you can have IBD over and above Celiac. I had it during a period of intense stress over unemloyment, and when I got employed and that stress was removed, it went away. Of course, the Celiac symptoms stayed.
~~~~~~~~~~
I have both Celiac and Ulcerative colitis. I had severe diarrhea for 15
years with only a diagnosis and treatment for Colitis. I have been
Gluten Free for 7 years and NO diarrhea on a regular basis.
